In my very first engineering job, I found myself more than 5000 metres above sea level in the Peruvian Andes, looking out over the barbed wire fence from the comfort of the compound the mining company provided for visiting engineers. There I could see the local town, that I had found out that very day had to move because minerals had been discovered underneath. My reaction could not have been more visceral: I was there making foreigners richer while locals and the earth paid the price. I knew right then I had to make a 180° turn, and my career ever since has been dedicated to finding ever higher leverage ways to create positive, equitable outcomes for people & planet.
I have a 2 year old son, and every time I see him I’m reminded
